Revitalisation of Panglima Laot Local Wisdom in Acehnese Coastal Communities as a Cultural and Historical System

Abstract


Panglima Laot is a traditional institution that has long regulated the life of coastal communities in Aceh. This study aims to analyse Panglima Laot as a historical and cultural system and its relevance in contemporary coastal society. This research uses a qualitative approach with case studies in three lhok areas through interviews, observation, and documentation. The results show that Panglima Laot is not merely a fisheries management institution but also a cultural system that regulates human relations with the sea, social order, and ecological balance. Historically, this institution has undergone transformation from a traditional system to formal recognition without losing its social legitimacy. In cultural perspective, practices such as fishing taboos, rituals, and conflict resolution reflect local knowledge systems that support sustainability. This study concludes that revitalising Panglima Laot strengthens cultural identity and supports sustainable coastal life.
